Summing Up Trump
By Nick Jackson
In November of 2016, the world was shocked by the election of Donald J Trump as America's new president. Trump gained popularity by attempting to relate to the common people. Leaders around the world were in awe as the populist uprising took place.
After a year in office, a handful of notable changes have swept through this nation, with many of the ideas being polarizing and creating a strong divide among the American people. Trump has also worked hard to dismantle the legacy left by former President Barack Obama.
Most students at Novato High seem to have a strong negative view towards Trump, but the school does have a few outliers that are very vocal with their support for the conservative president.
“He has displayed himself pretty poorly, and as a dumb guy,” explained junior Max Grabovac. “He has also removed a lot of valuable environmental regulations as well.”
Overall, from a statistical standpoint, Trump has done well economically throughout his first year in office, but when taking into account the amount of his crazy (borderline racist) comments and actions, the view of him becomes much less favorable.
Statistically, the stock market is frequently hitting all time highs, unemployment is the lowest it has been in 17 years, and the power of ISIS has been diminished.
While many on the left attribute Trump's success in these categories to former President Obama, these claims are often baseless and used to delegitimize Trump's accomplishments.
Trump has followed through with his promise to eliminate foreign terrorist threats.
According to Jamie McIntyre of The Washington Examiner, “The defeat of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria rapidly accelerated during President Trump’s first year in office, beginning with the fall of East Mosul on January 25, and continuing with a cascading series of defeats for the brutal terrorist group over the next 11 months.”
“The campaign liberated twice as many people and 18 percent more territory as in the previous 28 months under President Barack Obama, according to Defense Department figures,” McIntyre continued.
Trump also deserves credit for the nation’s booming economy, as many new jobs have just begun to return to our country, and the stock market is hitting all-time highs.
This is like due to Trump's success in raising business confidence, leading to more investments. According to a University of Michigan poll that was found on Politifact.com, business confidence is the highest that it has been since 2004.
The mainstream media has played a massive part in creating a divide throughout our nation and delegitimizing the Trump presidency.
It has become apparent that the media has been anti-trump and conservative public figures in general for years. Donna Brazile, a former CNN analyst, was found to have given Hillary Clinton debate questions prior to a presidential debate. This shows a potential Clinton bias from CNN, one of the major news networks.
“Donna Brazile is not apologizing for leaking CNN debate questions and topics to the Hillary Clinton campaign during the Democratic primary. Her only regret, it seems, is that she got caught,” according to Douglas Ernst of the Washington Post
For all the things that Trump has done well in office, he has made just as many if not more irresponsible and unprofessional comments to hurt his reputation and make the country look bad.
Trump has made many racially insensitive and provocative comments.
“They’re rapists. And some I assume are good people,” Trump explained in a campaign speech, referring to illegal immigrants. Trump is stoutly against illegal immigration and desires the construction of a wall on our southern border.
This is just one of many despicable comments made by our president, many of which compromise the nation's integrity.
Lily Manshouri is a Novato High junior that is strongly against president Trump.
“Well he's simply just not a great person,” explained Manshouri. “He also doesn't really handle situations well on Twitter.”
Trump’s Twitter account may seem as if it is a parody account when you first look at it, but when you learn that the tweets are indeed made by the president himself, it is shocking that the leader of the free world would have such immature usage of social media.
After 1 year, we have seen many notable changes take place, both for the better and for the worst. In the future we will see Donald Trump will attempt to enact policies on polarizing issues such as the border wall and healthcare reform.
