The Lone Senior
By Lily Munsee
As the only senior on the Novato girl’s varsity basketball team, Sarah Bailey is clearly a leader. However, her guidance reaches far beyond the court. She looks after her teammates and brings a great deal of maturity to the young team.
“I’m definitely team mom,” said Bailey. “It’s kind of an ongoing joke but it is quite serious though. I am the team mom in the sense where I am the one that’s braiding the hair, making sure everyone has water, making sure everyone has their uniform, and everyone has a ride.”
She had been a guiding force on the JV basketball team for three years, and this year, she has moved up to varsity.
“I definitely bring a loud mouth to the team,” said Bailey. “I never want the girls to get down on themselves if they’re not having the best game, so I just want to be able to remind the girls of their playing abilities and just really make sure that they’re confident in themselves and each other.”
As far as being the only senior on the team, Bailey is definitely up to the challenge of taking on the responsibilities most teams share among multiple players.
“I think being the only senior on the team is really quite unique. My first senior night was shared with seven other girls and we were all equal leaders on the team, so now that I am the only senior I have become that sort of team mom role,” said Bailey, comparing her volleyball senior night to basketball.
This added responsibility doesn’t bother Bailey.
“I’ve kind of just assumed the role with open arms because I think it’s great.”
Bailey has been a post and a center all her life.
“It’s because I have typically been bigger and taller than all the other girls,” said Bailey.
She is an extremely hard worker, and her teammates are not the only ones to notice.
“Sarah always gives 100%,” said Hornets Coach Kevin Conklin. “Whether she’s on the court or on the bench, she’s fully invested in the team and the girls.”
Coach Conklin sees Bailey as a leader as well.
“All the girls love her,” said Conklin. “They look up to her and match the level of intensity she brings to the court. They all definitely listen to her coaching and advice, and love her constant praise.”
Overall, Bailey is a team player, who will never miss the opportunity to cheer on her teammates.
“My favorite aspect of basketball is definitely how much of a team sport it is,” said Bailey. “The love and chemistry that we have on the court really just goes to show how much girls can unite over one sport. These girls are my family.”
