The Beauty of Kindness
By Lauren Pratt
Kindness is defined as the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate.
Kind people are certainly the best kind of people. There is a lot less kindness in this decade that we live in today. There have been many studies throughout the years that random acts of kindness can increase a happier and better life. According to dartmouth.edu, kindness can increase your lifespan, energy, happiness, and make you more of a positive overall person. Kindness also significantly decreases pain, depression, blood pressure, eases social anxiety, and stress. Kindness helps increase your lifespan, if you help others in need.
Junior Dominic Kalfos described how kindness impacts him.
“Kindness personally makes me feel happier. When I am kind to someone and it makes them feel better and appreciated, it feels nice. My favorite part of my day is always putting a smile on someone’s face,” said Kalfos.
Junior Kylee Early shared her thoughts about kindness.
“I think happiness can impact someone’s life greatly because you never know what they are going through and by doing a kind gesture such as smiling at them in the hallway or saying hello, can really turn their day around from being horrible to a better day. It can prevent people from harming themselves or feeling depressed as no one cares and can show them that they do care. I am a big believer of the phrase, ‘treat people the way you want to be treated’ and a little happiness can change everything,” said Early.
Being an kind person overall makes you more likely to be “other-oriented” rather than self-centered. When you make others feel good, you will feel good. Most people desire to be a good person but not everyone gives out the positivity that they can truly bring to the surrounding world.
Many people have social anxiety in high school because they are coming into a new environment. Acts of kindness can help to counter negative social expectations by promoting more positive perceptions and expectations of one’s social environment.
Overall, kindness is something that should always be spread. Kindness is compassion, courtesy, and tenderness. Being kind to one another changes everything. The world will be improved by lifting up others. People should learn to do everything with kindness.
Senior Cameron Norris said it best.
“Kindness helps others because if everyone were kind, there wouldn’t be any reason to be nervous or afraid to meet new people and make friends or try out for sports or start a new school, as I had to do this year. There is always people that look down on you or make you a bit nervous. To me, kindness means treating others with respect and with positivity. Kindness makes me feel happy and loved,” Norris said.
Treat everything with kindness… :)
