A Spotlight on Aaron Fix
By Makayla Gillis
Aaron Fix is a friendly science teacher at Novato High. He is usually seen with a ponytail, black glasses, a brown blazer or black sweater, and black shoes. He teaches in room 2601, right next to the bathroom and the cafeteria.
Fix is originally from Southern California, but now lives in Novato. Fix lived in England for five years. In his free time he likes to go hiking, biking, and reading the Paramount. Some of Fix’s hobbies are photography and ceramics.
He began teaching in 2002, and has been teaching at Novato High for 15 years. He graduated from John W. North High and attended University of California, Santa Cruz, and University of Pennsylvania.
Before he came to Novato and began teaching, he worked at the University of Pennsylvania hospital, and also had a summer job at the Nevada neurology test site.
Fix is also the head of the Novato Unified School District’s teachers’ union and has helped with many problems. Of course, there has been a lot of controversy surrounding teachers’ salaries.
According to the Huffington Post, “American public school teachers are underpaid compared to workers in the U.S. with similar education levels. Elementary school teachers in the U.S. make 67 percent of what college-educated workers in other professions earn. High school teachers earn 71 percent of what other college-educated workers make.”
The teachers union was created in the 1960s by Novato teachers.
“It’s pushing the school board and the district. We have gained 100 teachers over the years and lost 100 teachers,” Fix said.
As president of the union, Fix faces many obstacles as to help teachers. One obstacle in the classroom is children spending too much time on their phones.
“I think that the kids we have now have been on screens since they were born, so this is very different. It was a lot different back when I was little,” Fix stated.
English teacher Kathryn Korff said she thinks Fix is a good teacher.
“I think he is very hardworking and nice man,” Korff said.
“He has been a big help for teachers, and has pushed very hard to protect the rights of teachers,” Korff stated.
Fix is a busy teacher. He is a very determined and hard-working man. Fix has been teaching at Novato High for a very long time, and has maintained a good reputation throughout the years.
