Every Tuesday, the Cooking Club is fixing up some delicious meals and snacks in English and Geography teacher Mike Taber’s classroom. The club is currently run by sophomores Grace Nakashima and her partner Eric Avina. Together they work with a group of mainly freshmen and sophomores to bring together a variety of cuisines.
It’s no secret that there’s a gap in the elective schedule, where a culinary class would be a solid option. Grace Nakashima discussed her opinion of the nonexistent elective.
“I think a culinary class would be a great source of education on food, cooking, and lifestyle choices for students, along with potential careers,” Nakashima said. “After high school, a lot of students go into working at restaurants or fast food places. Their whole lives, people are going to be eating, so it’s good to know how to make the food they're putting into their body for a healthier diet.”
It would be beneficial for all students to have a home economics class. People don’t understand the importance of knowing how to simply cook an egg. These are skills any student could benefit from, since it will be useful throughout their lives.
The Cooking Club represents a possible start to gaining a culinary elective at Novato High. Tia Grechis, a member of this club, expressed her love for what they do.
“I love it because we get to come together and enjoy different cultures, and things we all made,” Grechis said. “It just makes me happy because I have met so many new people from this club.”
A culinary class would not only include the adventures of cooking, but also bring students together in a social environment. Any social gathering is more desirable with delicious meals. Bruno Francis-Hall, another member of the club, claims he would enroll in a culinary elective.
“Yes, I would definitely join a home ec class because I think it’s important to learn how to cook,” Francis-Hall said. “It’s basic life skills.”
Many students, and occasionally adults, go the easy route in either microwaving frozen meals or simply spending money on fast food. In a home ec class, students could learn how to create different breakfasts, lunches, or dinners from scratch. Everything homemade is always better tasting.
In the end, we all need to have the skills of not only academics, but also knowing how to sustain ourselves after high school. The experience and knowledge a culinary class would provide are immeasurable. While knowing math, science, and English are all important, the art of cooking is magical and essential on an entirely different level.
