Glenn Corey, a Novato High School teacher, is in charge of an innovative product design class, which helps students create projects they are interested in.
Corey enjoys teaching his students and helping them learn through failure. He is seen as great teacher in class and a nice guy outside of class.
“Mr. Corey is a really good teacher that really tries to be apart of our class as one of us and really loves teaching everyone and you can ask him anything, and he will always answer and try to help you,” said Jason Hines one of Corey’s students.
Corey truly loves teaching his students and inspires them to design projects on their own. He gives his students full freedom with their projects so that it becomes their own. He often gives them an idea of something to start with, and then instructs them to make whatever they want. For example, the students had to create a “mechanical project” which could move on its own once you turned a handle.
“We have to make a portfolio that includes the years’ progress and results,” said Hines. “For my current project I have to research how to make a cane pole for fishing and then build the pole for my project.”
Corey has a solid reputation for being an outstanding teacher. In 2014, he won the Allen Foundation Award. They look for teachers who promote innovation and entrepreneurialism. He teaches his students to learn through failure. He wants his students to find ways to succeed.
“I ask them first what they care about then I teach them some techniques for brainstorming and how do you take feedback from other people,” said Corey. “We use the design thinking process that comes out of the Stanford D School and the steps for the design process are 1 find a problem, 2 empathize with the user so that you understand what your user needs, 3 define the problem so that can you define it so well that anybody understand what the problem is, the next step we call idiating, which means brainstorming and coming up with ideas on how to solve that specific problem and then prototyping it coming up with simple way of testing it and then test it and then modify the test and keep testing until you have a good product.”
Corey’s product design class is loved by many students all around the campus. Students who have taken his class highly recommend his class to others.
“I would recommend the class,” said Hines. “The class is an elective where you can design cool products and learn important skills that can be useful in construction or programming.”
Many people may know Glenn Corey for what he does at school, but before he was a teacher, he had many successful jobs designing products. At one point, he was a toy designer. The first toy he designed was meant for his daughter.
“The first toy I ever made, I was looking for problems,” Corey said. “My daughter used to take off all the time when she was really little and she didn't speak english very well and she would just leave without worrying where we were and I was really afraid of losing her so I made a toy that would be a little lovely creature that she carried with her and had on its back a little emergency button and if you press the emergency button it would give them my information, so I wanted to make this toy that would have a relationship with her and she wanted to have with her that would play so if she got lost I’d be able to get her back.”
He was very successful before he started teaching. After he put his children through college, he decided to become a teacher because it’s something he always wanted to do. One of Corey’s strengths as an esteemed educator is empowering students to create projects they love. Corey consistently encourages students to fight through struggles. Novato High is fortunate to have a teacher like Mr. Corey.
