DEAR NATE, I am writing for the new feature in your newspaper. I am a freshman and have been with my boyfriend who is also a freshman for two years. I love him, but he is really clingy and wants to spend all of his free time with me. There have been times this year when I've been talking with sophomores, and he doesn't like it. He told me he does not want me going to any of their parties. Some of the sophomore boys I talk to are really nice, but they are just friends. I think I want some space but I don't want to hurt my boyfriend. This is difficult. What should I do?
Dear Freshman-With-The-Whipped-Boyfriend, Ok well this is definitely a hard situation. First off, well done with 2 years! That's so long. I understand how it is very hard to talk to a partner about a situation like this, but that is truly the best thing to do. You should talk to him in person and explain that you love him and want to be with him, but that you need some space. Also, those “nice” sophomores you talk to are doing it for a reason. Most of the sophomores are little players and creeps, as they will butter you up before going in for the kill. Your boyfriend has every right to be mad that you talk to them. They are most likely trying to get with you so I would be careful.
DEAR NATE, My best friend and I like the same boy. I met him the day I turned 13 on the bus. I sat next to him and I felt an immediate connection. Little did I know he went to the same school as me. My best friend encouraged me to sit next to him. We all became best friends over the last two years. On a trip to a summer camp, my best friend, who we can call Sam, decided that she liked him too. She started acting more like me, changing the way she dressed and the way she did her hair. It was like she was my twin. The boy, who we can call Luke, became confused too. He didn't know which one of us to pick because he didn't want to harm our friendship. We are 15 now and still in the same love triangle. What should we do? How can we fix this without hurting each other?
Dear Girl-Who-Falls-In-Love-Too-Easy, Well damn, I don't know how you got yourself into this one, but I can help. All you did was sit next to him and you fell in love. That's dope. Anyways, if you know that your best friend likes him too, you should make an extra effort to get him. Make plans with him, hang out a lot, and don't be afraid to come off kinda strong. Dudes actually like it. If this doesn't work, honestly tell your friend that you sincerely like him and you liked him first. If it doesn't work out for you, then your friend can have a try, but make sure you go first. And remember you were the original you, not your friend.
DEAR NATE, My friend’s cousin blocked me on their Instagram and I do not know how to get them to let me back in.
Dear Guy-Who-Gets-Blocked, This is weird, my dude. I have no clue what you did to get blocked on your friend's cousin’s Instagram, but it probably was well deserved. I don’t know what to say besides apologize and let the person know it won't happen again. If you truly care, try talking to them in person and getting it worked out. Maybe you can learn to simply not care. Sorry bro, good luck.
DEAR NATE, lately I have been struggling to decide to stay a vegetarian or to eat meat again. Please tell me; do I eat the meat or stick to veggies?
Dear Struggling-Plant-Killer, In my opinion, there is nothing better than meat. When I sit down for dinner, I don't look forward to the salad on my plate. Hell, usually there isn't even a salad. I'm thick. The juicy meat is where it’s at and it completes every meal. If you eat meat, it doesn't mean you will be fat or unhealthy. It’s a great source of protein. If you are going vegetarian for dieting purposes, don't do it. It’s all about portions. Go back to meat because you are missing out. If it is because you are sorry for animals or whatever, don't be. Humans need to eat just like anything else. A big meaty lion isn't sorry for a gazelle when it eats its face, so don't be sad when someone kills a pig so you can have some great bacon. Go back to meat!
DEAR NATE, Lately all my friends have been moving on to harder drugs and I've felt peer pressured into trying them also. They want to do coke now, and do you know where I can get some?
Dear Dude-Who-Needs-To-Find-Better-Friends, Come on, were you ever in Mrs. Searle’s class? Peer pressure is easy to get over. Follow the steps. Walk away if you don't want to do it. I understand it is hard because they are your buds, but hard drugs are very bad. You don't want to become a druggie or an addict. Also, if you are already doing drugs, that's dangerous and you should learn about the long-term effects. Drug use recreationally isn't always awful, but if you guys are doing it on school days, it’s time to tone it down. Yes, the city of Novato is the worst, but don't turn to drugs to find fun. Go do something less illegal like trespassing in some dope spots, such as abandoned places in Hamilton or spots under the Golden Gate Bridge. Personally, I have no clue where you can find coke, and maybe you shouldn’t find it at all. Stick to what you know and make smart decisions. If you are actually feeling peer pressured by your friends, maybe you can talk to someone. There are a lot of resources on campus and your parents are always there.
