18 under 18: Remarkable Hornets

Inspired by Forbes Magazine’s 30 under 30 list of the most accomplished entrepreneurs under 30 years of age, The Swarm now presents the second installment of 18 under 18, a list highlighting some of the truly exceptional and outstanding students at Novato High.
Brandon Llamas (junior)
Brandon has been growing his musical career over the past three years. Going by the stage name, Half Metal Kaiba, he has released multiple singles and a mixtape titled “Siren’s Anthems”.
On April 23, he competed at a show for The Showcase Tour in Oakland with other local rappers for a chance to win a 30 show tour.
Caleb Brouder (senior)
Caleb has been swimming since a young age, but has only swam competitively for the past five years. He has played water polo at NHS for four years. In that time, the team made NCS for the first time since he joined NHS, and he was named the Most Improved Player on the water polo team.
This year he also participated in the San Francisco event, Escape from Alcatraz. He described the experience as “fun and challenging,” having trained for close to 100 hours.
Brouder enjoyed the experience so much that he is now training for a triathlon.
Eliott Scheuer (sophomore)
Eliott is a is prominent activist on campus. He has been involved with the Marin REST program for over 10 years. He has also worked alongside his mom for the Prisoner Advocacy Network and the Family Unity Project.
He and a group of friends also worked on planning a March For Our Lives event in Novato.
Erin Marino (senior)
Erin Marino is a talented Irish dancer, Jazz Band player, and academically talented student.
Marino has been Irish dancing for over 10 years, and regularly competing at the championship level. She is also the annual halftime performer for the NBA Golden State Warriors Irish Heritage night.
At the same time, she plays the flute and saxophone in MSA’s Jazz 1 class and Advanced Wind Ensemble.
“Balancing my dance classes, music schedule, and academica was tough,” said Marino. “Academics have always come first for me, but I also remind myself how balance is important to living a fulfilling life. My mentors and teachers have been really understanding with helping me coordinate all my activities into my schedule. I have a genuine passion for dance, music, and feeding my intellectual curiosity, so I wanted to ensure I never had to give any one of those up… each one of these three areas in my life continue to grow and enrich me as a person.”
Marino will be attending Stanford in the fall, studying neuroscience.
Ethan Paisley (senior)
Ethan began filmmaking when he was 12 years old, after making multiple successful Youtube videos. In 2015, he began his production company, Take18 Entertainment. Ethan has produced multiple films, many which have succeeded at film festivals like the Cannes Film Festival at the Marché du Film and the Mill Valley Film Festival.
Ethan has won multiple awards including, Best Young Filmmaker at the Los Angeles Film Awards, Best Short Film for Playing The Game at The Luminescence International Teen Film Festival, and Best Short Film for OAK at the Equality International Film Festival.
He will be attending Chapman University in the fall, pursuing Creative Producing.
Gabe Garcia (senior)
Gabe was selected by the North Coast Section of CIF to receive the North Coast Section Foundation awards and scholarship. During his time at Novato High, Garcia has participated in tennis, track, and cross country.
Garcia is also a very talented singer, and has been part of our MSA choir program.
Karolina Spinelli (sophomore)
Karolina is a talented very talented skier, as she has been skiing since she was nine-years old. Ever since she started skiing, she has been up at the slopes almost every weekend during the winter months.
“It's a very big part of my everyday life during the season,” said Spinelli.
Spinelli was a competitive skier for a period of time, but then quit as it took too much time. As she advanced, she would have had to practice during the week, which is difficult as she doesn’t live in Tahoe.
Kiara Vasquez (sophomore)
Current sophomore Kiara Vasquez is next year’s junior class president.
During her presidency, she hopes to find ways to put an emphasis on mental health at NHS.
The ambitious Vasquez has previously described herself as “a voice for underdog,” and will aim to please the needs of NHS students next year.
Meredith Patchett (sophomore)
Sophomore Meredith Patchett is an incredible actress in our MSA Theatre program and was the star of last years MSA production of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.” Patchett has been in over 20 productions throughout her whole life.
“Most people say I’m a very theatrical person so it’s a perfect fit for me,” said Patchett. “I find theatre to be an exquisite and entertaining art form. It accumulates many different artists to create one product; it has this sense of community like nothing else.”
One of Patchett’s proudest moments was winning Best Musical at the Rita Moreno California High School Theatre Awards for “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.”
Zach Mcintyre (sophomore)
Zach is an accomplished swimmer here at NHS, and has been swimming since he was four years old. Mcintyre is the first Novato High boy swimmer to win MCALS and place in the top 8 at NCS.
“A big motivation for my swim is college, as it will dramatically help my chances of getting in,” said Mcintyre.
AJ Neff (junior)
Junior AJ Neff is a avid surfer and an up and coming high school diving star.
This year, Neff won an MCAL title with a score of 447.60
Ava Scafani (freshman)
Freshman Ava Scafani is a level 10 gymnast and an incredible diver at Novato High.
This last diving season, she won an MCAL title with a score of 477.55.
Chadd Alciati (senior)
Senior Chadd is in the MSA Film class here at Novato.
Recently, he filmed and directed a short film titled “Wilted”, the story of a woman facing the maternal struggles of expectations and reality, revealing her deepest emotions and pains.
Wilted was recently screened at the Festival De Cannes.
Charlie Mossberger (sophomore)
Sophomore Charlie Mossberger has been doing civil war reenactments for the last two years.
His interest in American history sparked his participation in the reenactments.
Hope Spinelli (freshman)
Hope is a dancer for the Marin Ballet and MSA Dance.
Karl is an outstanding classical piano player, having played for approximately five years. Dedicated to his craft, Guhl practices his playing 4-5 hours a day and is part of a chamber group.
“The music emotionally drives me to become better and play more beautifully,” said Guhl, when asked about his inspiration to play.
Kelley Tilman (junior)
Kelley is a part of our MSA Theatre program and has been in multiple productions.
She is also a strong part of Novato High’s Earth Club and an inspiring environmentalist.
Zaria Willis (sophomore)
Zaria Willis is a sophomore in our MSA choir program.
